Philips Heart to Hands Awards

Imani Wilson, RDH

Dental hygiene is more than just a career to me—it is my calling and my passion. Every day, I am reminded of the profound impact I can have on people’s lives, whether it’s helping a patient feel more confident about their smile, educating students and professionals about oral health, or advocating for better access to care. My journey as a dental hygienist has been defined by these moments of connection and care, and they continue to inspire and energize me as I grow in this profession.

As a recent graduate, I have been fortunate to receive recognition for my dedication to the field. I was honored with the Hu-Friedy Golden Scaler award for Outstanding Clinician in my graduating class. This award affirmed my commitment to clinical excellence and my passion for patient care. One of the most memorable experiences I’ve had so far was helping an anxious patient who hadn’t seen a dentist in 25 years. This patient came to the office nervous and unsure of what to expect, but together, we worked step by step to rebuild their trust in dental care. By the end of their visit, they were smiling with relief and confidence. Moments like these remind me of the power of empathy, patience, and education in transforming someone’s health and self-esteem.

Beyond the clinical setting, I am dedicated to sharing my knowledge and experiences to inspire others in the dental hygiene community. I created my Instagram page, @toothymani, to provide encouragement and practical tips for students, fellow hygienists, and patients. Through this platform, I have built a community of individuals who share my passion for oral health and patient care. I’ve also had the privilege of collaborating with oral care brands like Philips Sonicare to highlight products that can truly make a difference in patient outcomes. Working with a brand that prioritizes innovation and oral health has been a rewarding extension of my clinical work.

Writing has also become a way for me to contribute to the profession. I’ve published an article with Dentistry IQ titled “4 Tips for Tackling the National Board Dental Hygiene Exam,” offering guidance to students navigating one of the biggest milestones in their careers. In January, I will have another article published in RDH Magazine, furthering my goal of supporting and inspiring others in the field. These opportunities to share my experiences and insights have been deeply fulfilling and have allowed me to reach a broader audience.

Public speaking has also been an important part of my journey. I was honored to speak to the Puerto Rico Dental Association about the importance of the dental hygiene profession. Advocacy is a cause close to my heart, and I am particularly inspired by movements that focus on improving access to care. I believe that everyone deserves quality oral healthcare, and I strive to contribute to this mission through education, mentorship, and patient-centered care.

At the core of everything I do is my love for helping, educating, and inspiring others. Whether it’s seeing a patient’s oral health improve over time or encouraging a student to persevere through their studies, these moments keep me excited about my career. Dental hygiene has given me the perfect platform to make a meaningful impact, and I look forward to continuing to grow and contribute to this incredible profession.
